The big 4Food Easter egg taste test

Never ones to shy away from hands-on research, the 4Food team hosted its annual Easter egg taste test on 4 April.
Over 40 intrepid Zone and Public Zone tasters turned out to chomp their way through 25 different eggs, ranging from the sublime (£50 worth of hand-carved ganache from Harrods) to the ridiculous (white chocolate with a real pumpkin purée and coconut filling).

Comments from our gastronomes were insightful and varied — "it tastes like cough medicine," declared one taster of a high-end gourmet egg — but following an afternoon of indulgence, the suprise winner was a Fairtrade Easter egg from The Co-operative, which at £10 was only a fraction of the price of numerous other contenders. Creamy, crunchy and filled with drool-worthy truffle mini eggs, the egg was a resounding hit with the testers. So much so that the remains were promptly swiped at the end of the day.

Other successes were a glamorous egg from gourmet range Godiva, and a good old Cadbury's milk chocolate egg, which everyone loved for its nostalgia value.
The Co-op was thrilled with their victory, issuing a press release that was picked up by both The Sun and The Mirror, and the gallery round-up of the Top 15 eggs has been performing brilliantly on the 4Food site and inspired heated debate among foodies on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the 4Food team have spent the last week eating salad.
