After all, it's Zone's wonderwall

Things we like
By Jon Davie

This week we were proud to unveil a very exciting addition to our office – a stunning tromp l’oeil illustration covering an entire double height wall in the main studio space. The piece, which measures 11m x 4m, was installed in secret over the Bank Holiday weekend, leading to open mouths and gasps of amazement from staff and visitors alike on Tuesday morning.

The project was conceived and managed by Giles Brenard, an old friend of Zone, former creative director at Guardian Creative and founder of consultancy You Will Learn To Love Us. Giles and his team commissioned illustrator Thibaud Herem to create the artwork, which was hand-drawn, scanned and digitally pieced together before being printed on wallpaper rolls for posting to the wall.

The work includes empty illustrated picture frames to create a virtual exhibition space, providing an opportunity to feature work from photographers, illustrators and artists. For launch, we’re featuring seven pieces by Brett Ryder, an illustrator whose commissions can be found on the pages of newspapers and magazines all over the world, including The Economist, GQ, The Telegraph, The New York Times, The LA Times and the New Scientist.

Other features include a real station clock (a nod to the building’s original use as the ticket hall for Euston station), an illustrated shelf containing the favourite books of everyone at Zone, and a secret door leading who knows where from the mezzanine that runs the full length of the office.

We hope you enjoy exploring the wall as much as we do – feel free to pop round for a look at the real thing if you’re passing by Euston anytime soon.
