Your Zone Friday – Lies, damned lies

Things we’ve done and things we like this week

Even in these straitened times, one thing we prefer not to economise with at Yuletide is the truth. I love my new jumper, grandma. Who wouldn’t want another slice of your anthrax cake, cousin George? Goodness, aunt Annabelle, but that beard suits you. In honour of festive fibbing, therefore, we bring you the little white lies of Zone Christmas.

Three things we've done

Coca-Cola GB

Tweeted our socks off

It’s under starter’s orders and – honest to goodness – it’s off. We're delighted to say that this week we launched the Coca-Cola GB Twitter feed and it's already groaning with nice ideas, tips and general Yuletide jollity.

Cupcake Kit

Postponed the diet

As you can imagine, our extensive Channel 4Food team get plenty of good-natured ribbing over their fondness for cake. Here, playing very much to type, is their cupcake kit to solve your gifting dilemmas.

Skateistan

Consorted with pioneers

This week our Relentless Energy team took a break from getting tattoos and wearing hats to catch up with a volunteer at Afghanistan’s first and only skate park to talk about their amazing work in this recovering country.

This week’s data makeover

Sharpen your forked tongue, cross your fingers and apply for a Cabinet post. Yes, we’re celebrating barefaced lies this week with a scientific poll of the most humungous whoppers we’ve ever told.

Zone hero of the week

Our brand spanking new creative director (don’t touch him, you’ll scratch the paint) Giles Brenard spent a fruitful hour or three putting up our specially commissioned office decorations. Props to designer Lynda Tomlinson for crafting said objects.

Tea or coffee? "Coffee. Flat white, for choice."

Geek of the Week speaks

Our tech team are on a mission to shed their nerdy reputation. We chart their progress…

Developer Alessandro Basso is, the more astute of you may have guessed, Italian. Convention dictates that he's good with cooking and women. Reality reveals that he makes a fine cupcake, but is a terrible liar.

‘I made this’

Zone staff share their creative moments

Senior project editor Charlie Cottrell recently sketched out her vision for the Future of Food – she’s not one for frivolity, is CC – with her pioneering white paper The Food Upgrade. If you like a little thought with your dinner, download it here

NEWSFLASH!

If you're stuck for something to buy a distant relative, friend you don't know that well, or colleague in a reasonably generous Secret Santa, our Channel 4 Foodie gifts for under a tenner could be right up your strasse.

Foodie Gifts for under a Tenner

Three things we like

A Few Good Men

The scene

People lie for all sorts of reasons, you know. Sometimes it's because we just can't handle the truth

Darth Vader

The Blog

Fake Twitter accounts are ten a penny these days, although the tweets from the lord @darthvader himself remain helmet and cape above the rest. "Come over to the dark side. We have cookies."

The Wire

The cult classic

The Wire is the greatest TV ever. Ever ever. Think we're lying? Decide for yourself with this mash-up of each episode's title, delivered in dialogue.
