Help people with diabetes manage their condition day to day
People with diabetes have to monitor their condition constantly, so accurately recording their food intake, weight, mood and blood levels is a daily challenge.
Research we conducted with the Diabetes UK Facebook community revealed that people with diabetes even lie to their doctors rather than admit they are not managing the condition as they are supposed to.
We worked with the Diabetes UK Facebook community to research, prototype, develop and release an iPhone application for people with the condition, providing a quick and easy way for them to collect and analyse their medical, dietary and lifestyle information accurately and conveniently.
The application offers users 10 simple ways to monitor their condition via the iPhone’s intuitive touchscreen interface. Simple prompts encourage the user to enter up-to-date data in real time, asking them to add notes and photos to provide context and additional information.
Informative graphics make it easy to see trends and correlations, and interpret often complex data. This helps friends, family and medical professionals to gain insights into the condition.
The app provides a secure and accessible source for all the user’s medical notes, including information about their GP and/or specialist – a simple solution based on a simple consumer insight: most people never leave home without their mobile.
By working with the existing Facebook community, we had a willing audience of volunteers to help us test, refine and improve the app. When the time came to launch the final version, we then had a ready-made audience to help us spread the word to people with diabetes all over the world.
Within six months of the launch, the application was downloaded more than 18,000 times, and had an average user rating of 4.5/5 from App Store customers.
The app has also been given an official endorsement by the NHS. Now GPs can recommend our solution to help patients manage their condition more effectively. Consumer press and trade titles also gave the app positive reviews.
